A nice Hildoceras still covered with some matrix.
The story goes that St Hilda wanted to found an abbey in Whitby, but found the area infested with snakes, so she turned them all to stone,which is why some locals carved heads onto the ammonites as proof of this so called miracle!
The specimen measures 31mm.
